A Second Chance: How Leonard Russell Rebuilt His Life with The Salvation Army
When Leonard Russell was drafted 14th overall and named NFL Rookie of the Year, his future seemed limitless. But the pressure of success led him down a path of addiction that cost him his career, his marriage, and nearly his life.
At his lowest point, sitting in a jail cell and facing the consequences of his choices, Leonard realized he needed a radical change. Through the support and guidance of The Salvation Army, he began the difficult work of rebuilding his life.
Reflecting on that season of restoration, Leonard shares:
“The conversation with my wife… Salvation Army prepared me for that. Getting a job… Salvation Army prepared me for that. Apologizing to my kids and my parents… Salvation Army prepared me for that.”
With practical support, accountability, and encouragement, The Salvation Army walked alongside Leonard as he pursued sobriety, reentered the workforce, and took courageous steps toward reconciliation with his family. His story is one of humility, responsibility, and hope.
