When Will first came to The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida, he had little more than a backpack filled with basic hygiene items and an uncertain future. He was looking for something many of us take for granted: a safe place to call home.

“I came to The Salvation Army with a lot of uncertainty about my future,” Will recalled. “I don’t know where I’d be right now or where I would have been staying.”

Through The Salvation Army’s Transitional Housing program in the Red Shield Lodge at the Towers Center of Hope, Will found more than a place to sleep. He found the stability, support and encouragement he needed to begin rebuilding his life.

The program provided him with a bed, meals and a safe, secure place to stay. Just as importantly, it gave him the opportunity to establish a healthy daily routine and develop habits that would help him move forward.

For Will, the transformation didn't happen overnight. It came through small, meaningful steps and the realization that his circumstances were beginning to change.

After several months in the program, he took time to reflect on how far he had come.

“There was a turning point when I realized my life was changing for the better,” he said. “I was able to look back at my time at The Salvation Army and see how I was using that time. My life was definitely changing for the better compared to where I was before. I felt a deep sense of thankfulness and gratitude.”

His experience also brought about a personal transformation in his faith and relationships with others. Before entering the program, Will admits he was skeptical of people and often approached life with cynicism. Having a safe and supportive environment allowed him to begin letting down his guard.

“While in the program, I learned to have a greater sense of trust in God and also trust in others,” he said. “The Salvation Army gave me a safe place to better learn how to trust people.”

Today, Will recognizes that the opportunity to rebuild his life would not have been possible without the generosity of Salvation Army supporters.

He has a heartfelt message for those who give their time, resources and prayers to help neighbors facing difficult circumstances: thank you.

“I would not be where I am now without donor support,” Will said. “I’m so grateful to have had a safe, secure place to live while I rebuilt my life.”

For Will, the journey has been about more than finding a place to stay. It has been about rediscovering his ability to trust, finding strength in his faith and realizing that even in the most uncertain seasons of life, change is possible.

When he first walked through The Salvation Army’s doors, he carried a backpack and a lot of unanswered questions about what tomorrow might bring. Today, he looks back with gratitude, knowing he is no longer in the same place he was when he arrived.

Sometimes, a fresh start begins with something as simple as a safe place to land. For Will, that place became the beginning of a life filled with renewed hope, purpose and possibilities.

“I’m just incredibly grateful. Having a safe, secure place to live gave me the opportunity to rebuild my life and figure out what comes next. I honestly don’t know where I would be today without that opportunity.”
