MEDIA INVITATION: 335 LOCAL CHILDREN TO SHOP FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES WITH THE SALVATION ARMY
Press invited to experience personalized Back-to-School distribution August 11–13
MEDFORD, Ore., August 11, 2026 — Backpacks are ready, school supply lists are in hand, and over the next three days, 335 local children will arrive at The Salvation Army for a personalized Back-to-School shopping experience designed to help them start the school year prepared and confident.
The Salvation Army Jackson County invites members of the media to visit its Back-to-School distribution August 11–13 and see the program in action.
Rather than simply handing families a pre-packed backpack, each child arrives for an individual appointment and is paired with a personal volunteer shopper. Together, they use the child’s school-recommended supply list to select the backpack and supplies needed for their specific school and grade.
“This is about so much more than handing a child a backpack,” said Major Jonnette Mulch of The Salvation Army Jackson County. “We want each child to be part of the experience, to choose the things they are excited to take to school and to walk away knowing their community cares about them. Every child deserves to begin the school year feeling prepared and ready to learn.”
The personalized appointments also allow volunteers to give their full attention to each child and family, creating a welcoming experience while helping ensure students receive the items requested by their schools.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend during distribution hours to capture children shopping with volunteers, backpacks and school supplies being selected, and the community effort behind preparing hundreds of local students for the new school year.
Interview opportunities with Salvation Army representatives and volunteers will also be available.
Community members who would still like to support local children can donate new school supplies, backpacks or financial gifts to The Salvation Army. Donations help fill gaps in school supply lists and ensure children have the essentials they need to begin the year successfully.
