Volunteer

Volunteers provide help and hope to those in greatest need.

Did you know that more than 3 million people volunteer for The Salvation Army across the United States every year? From ringing bells during the holiday season to distributing supplies in the wake of a local disaster and serving food to the hungry, volunteers are the backbone of The Salvation Army's efforts to help those in need.

Our volunteers are making a difference for families and individuals throughout Western South Dakota by giving their time and sharing their skills, volunteers make our work possible every day.  Their positive influence changes lives, uplifts families and strengthens the communities we serve.

Individual and group opportunities

  • Coats for Kids: Every year, we collect donated new coats for children and families in need. Volunteers are needed to receive and sort the hundreds of coats that we receive.
  • Emergency Disaster Services: Our Emergency Disaster Services assists emergency responders and disaster survivors as needed. Join our team of trained volunteers that respond to local disasters, fires and events in our community. Be the first on the front lines to lend dehydration, food, and physical/emotional/spiritual support to our local fire and police departments. Learn More.
  • Become a Bell Ringer: Our iconic Red Kettle is a staple during the Christmas season. From November 1 - December 31, hundreds of families, school groups, corporate groups, and individuals register to ring for The Salvation Army. This fundraising effort enables us to reach those who would otherwise be forgotten. Volunteer bell ringers have a tremendous impact by helping us serve their local community. We can never have too many bell ringers in the Black Hills area! Volunteers work in two-hour shifts, typically ringing at a storefront. Go to registertoring.com for more information. Click here to learn more about our "Ring for Bling" event.

Volunteers are valuable assets in The Salvation Army's efforts to meet human need in the Black Hills region.

By giving their time and sharing their skills, volunteers make significant contributions to society every day. Their positive influence changes lives, uplifts families and strengthens our community.
