Providing the tools for successful reunification

Foster Care and Adoption Birth Family Services Information

In Pennsylvania, the goal for most children in foster care is reunification with their birth family. But first, their birth family must resolve the circumstances that caused the child to be placed into foster care, and they must be able to provide a safe, stable home. To ensure the best interests of the children we serve are met, The Salvation Army provides support services to strengthen birth families’ ability to care for their children.

A TBRI® trained Visit Coach works with birth parents to help them work through their court-ordered plan, so they can provide a stable home environment. The Visit Coach meets with the birth family before, during and after their supervised visits with their child, so parents understand the developmental, emotional, and physical needs of their children and learn new, healthy, parenting skills. Visit Coaches also work to support positive and effective communication and relationships between parent, child, foster parents, and caseworkers, so everyone is working together in a positive way.

Many birth parents have their own history of childhood trauma that impacts their lives. Parent education, such as our 8-Week Making Sense of Your Worth® and Parenting for Positive Self Worth® programs, help birth parents understand and heal from their own trauma so they can learn to successfully parent their children.

Family visits between children in foster care and their birth parents are an emotional time for both parents and children. To create a positive environment, The Salvation Army operates The Comfort Cottage on behalf of Lehigh County, a place where birth families and their children can visit in a warm, home-like setting and spend quality time together.
