Early Head Start

The Salvation Army's Early Head Start is a federally funded program that serves low-income families with infants or toddlers and pregnant women.

The Salvation Army Early Head Start program is based out of Heritage Place at Renaissance Village, 3612 Cuming St. It is a federally funded, year-round home visiting program that serves low-income infants, toddlers, pregnant women and their families. 

The Early Head Start Program: 

  • Utilizes a researched-based curriculum that enhances children’s physical, social, emotional, language and intellectual development;
  • Focuses on School Readiness to prepare children for Head Start or Pre-K;
  • Supports parents’ efforts to fulfill their parental roles and helps them move toward self-sufficiency; 
  • Partners with Early Development Network (EDN) to serve children with disabilities;
  • Offers bimonthly onsite socializations where families are served a healthy meal and can enjoy fellowship and fun family activities;
  • Assists pregnant mothers to access comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care and mental health services, and provides transportation to appointments;
  • Connects families to local healthcare providers and provides transportation to children’s well-baby checks, dental, vision, and specialist appointments;
  • Offers opportunities to earn points and shop at our Baby Boutique with material assistance items for pregnant mothers, infants and toddlers;
  • Partners with WIC to offer nutrition assessments and education;
  • Has bilingual staff that serve families in their native language; and
  • Provides limited transportation to program socializations, events and social services appointments to meet family’s needs.

How Early Head Start Works

Early Head Start provides weekly in-home visits focusing on early childhood and prenatal education for low-income families with children ages 0-3 and pregnant mothers.

Early Head Start has a total funded enrollment of 111.

How to Apply for Early Head Start

Families qualify for the program if they: 

  • Live in Douglas County; and
  • Are expecting a baby or have a child ages 2 or under; and
  • Are low-income according to the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or
  • Are receiving SNAP or TANF; or
  • Are homeless or have children in foster care
