Captains Larry and Gloria Carmichael bring a decade of experience to new role

As of July 1, The Salvation Army of Jasper and Newton Counties welcomed new leadership. Captains Larry and Gloria Carmichael join as the Corps Community Center administrators. In their role, Captains Carmichael are responsible for mission and ministry in both Jasper and Newton Counties through the Center and Thrift Store.

Captains Bill and Deb Middendorp, who served as corps administrators in Jasper and Newton Counties since 2023, have been assigned as Corps officers in Glendale, California.

Before marrying in 2024, Captains Larry and Gloria faithfully served as single Salvation Army officers for eight years. They recently celebrated two years of marriage and ministry together, combining their unique gifts and experiences in service to God and others.

Since their commissioning as officers in 2016, they have served in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Arizona and California in varying capacities. From corps administrator to Kroc Center officer, and Hispanic ministry and outreach, Captains Carmichael are committed to holistic ministry that reaches people with both compassion and purpose.

"We have a real passion for preaching the Gospel and helping people experience the transforming love of Jesus Christ," said Captain Larry. "We aim to serve with compassion and dignity, bringing vision to the communities in which we serve and ensuring that our community and neighbors in need have the resources and the faith foundation to succeed."

Captain Larry earned his B.S. in Biblical Studies, M.S. in Organizational Leadership, and A.A. in Ministries. Captain Gloria also holds an A.A. degree in Ministry. They will serve at the Corps Community Center located at 320 E 8th St. in Joplin.

Salvation Army officers are appointed to new roles periodically, and such appointments are prayerfully evaluated based on community needs, officer skills, length of service, children’s schooling, and a number of other factors.
