Never Too Old to Believe

“Can you imagine being in your 50s the first time you got a gift from Santa?”

Last Christmas Day, The Salvation Army Columbia Corps made wishes come true as Major Merrill Powers dressed as Santa Claus to spread a little extra cheer. As he visited with individuals we serve, handing out gifts, one recipient was especially touched.

“What I know is that I went to The Salvation Army homeless, lost and lonely. I found myself there — I became happy again, I gained my family back, and I learned how to love myself again,” our client said.

After her time at the Columbia Corps and assistance from Majors Nancy and Merrill Powers, the client is supporting herself through full-time employment, living in her own apartment, has been sober for over 18 months, and is engaged to be married. In Columbia, we provide critical support and resources to our neighbors in need, including housing assistance and substance abuse recovery to help get folks back on their feet and most importantly, fill their hearts with hope.  

“I made a commitment to myself to be better, do better and want better for others,” our client said. “[I have a] willingness to help myself and help others be of service. I continue my journey because I want a better way of life.”

Staying connected with The Army, our client now actively volunteers in her community and is a member of her local church. Her story is a testament to what a little generosity can do. A Christmas gift can make a life-changing difference, no matter the age.

“Dressing up as Santa for a Christmas party might seem like an insignificant act, but I’m reminded by this story about what a tremendous impact one small act of kindness can have,” said Major Merrill. “We are so proud of everything that she has accomplished since walking through our doors last Christmas. God is good, and Major Nancy and I are overjoyed to share His love with the local community.”

Each year, The Salvation Army serves more than 1700 people in the Columbia area at Christmastime, providing them with gifts and food to help make the holidays a little brighter for their families.
