Stamp Out Hunger
About the event
Every year, on the second Saturday in May, the National Association of Letter Carriers collects donations of non-perishable food from each home they visit on their mail route. Donations are gathered at the post office at the end of the day, and here in Olmsted County, our team at The Salvation Army picks them up so that we can distribute them through our downtown food shelf.
In the last year, the number of people utilizing our food shelf each week more than doubled (134%). Financial and in-kind donations to the food shelf are invaluable to our efforts to keep up with this increased demand.
To donate food this year, please leave the nonperishable, not opened, and not expired groceries you would like to give inside or near your mailbox. When your letter carrier arrives, they will take the food back to the post office in order to get it to The Salvation Army.
Much needed food items include boxes of cereal and oatmeal, canned meats like tuna and spam, pasta and pasta sauces, common condiments like ketsup, mustard, maple syrup and mayonaise, canned or cup fruits, canned vegetables and soups, package meals, baking supplies, and snacks, especially ones appropriate for kids' lunch boxes.
Volunteers are always neede to help sort food donations after this event. To learn more about volunteer shifts, please call 507-288-3663.
