Overview

Every Wednesday and Friday, The Salvation Army of Petoskey hosts Community Meals and delivers meals to mobility‑impaired residents on Fridays. A dedicated team of experienced volunteers assists with meal preparation, serving, delivery, and cleanup under the supervision of Kitchen Manager Bridget Burns.

We serve many neighbors in need of not only a nutritious meal, but also a warm smile and friendly conversation.

  • 30–50 people attend each congregate meal
  • ~120 meals are delivered every Friday
  • 10,405 meals were provided last year

Our guests include:

  • Seniors age 65+
  • Homeless neighbors
  • Low‑income workers
  • Struggling young families

Socialization is especially vital for the large senior population, as it sharpens cognitive skills and helps prevent dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

Why Community Meals Matter

The Community Dinners help low‑income families and lonely individuals supplement their budgets in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. They allow the homeless to enjoy a hot meal surrounded by caring people, and provide crucial social connection for those at risk of isolation.

Additional benefits include:

  • Budget support so families can afford other necessities (rent, heat, electricity)
  • Fresh, prepared meals for seniors who may otherwise rely on frozen meals
  • Social interaction that helps prevent cognitive decline in seniors
