Who We Are

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Marquette County History

The Salvation Army has been serving Marquette County for more than a century. Our journey began in Ishpeming in 1889 and expanded to Marquette in 1893. For a short time in the early 1900s, we also operated in Negaunee. In those early years, worship services were held in both English and Swedish, reflecting the diverse communities we served.

In Ishpeming, our home stood at Third and Cleveland for 75 years until it was destroyed by a tragic oil heater explosion on February 16, 1964. Just two years later, in 1966, we moved into our current location, later expanding in 2000 to include offices, a gym, an elevator, and a welcoming new entrance.

In Marquette, The Salvation Army moved several times throughout the downtown area before settling at Third and Bluff in 1951, with a thrift store located on Washington Avenue. In 1998, both the worship and thrift store facilities were united at our current site.

For decades, the Marquette and Ishpeming locations operated separately. Then in 2018, the two units joined together to strengthen efficiency and expand the services we provide to the communities of Marquette County.
