The application period for families closed on December 3, after all 1,900 spots were filled. “We expected to see a significant increase in households applying this year due to the economy,” said Kent County Coordinator Major Tim Meyer. “We even added 160 additional spots. However, appointment slots were filled almost two weeks earlier this year, so we know and understand that people are struggling.  We want to especially thanks Consumers Energy, who is helping us help more families with a generous $25,000 donation as our Holiday Cheer Sponsor!”

More than 300 seniors and singles also received help through the Angel Tree program in 2025.

Along with Christmas Assistance, The Salvation Army in Kent County also has numerous programs that help those in need year-round.

Programs including: an emergency food pantry which has seen a 300% increase in households seeking assistance during the past year, one of the county’s largest seniors’ programs, which has been assessed and approved by the Area Agency on Aging of West Michigan, housing and utilities assistance, Pathway of Hope which helps families break the cycle of generational poverty, as well as programs to help individuals with substance abuse.
