Kent County Emergency Food Assistance Program

Due to inflation, more people are being forced to make extremely difficult decisions. Some are already struggling to make ends meet between social security or disability checks. They may be a single parent, a two-parent family making minimum wage or a grandparent raising their grandchildren.

Many must now decide between making their rent or house payment, purchasing lifesaving medications, or buying groceries. They can't do it all. And they rely on our Emergency Food Assistance Program to stretch their resources. If you face hunger, we want you to know that you are not alone.

Here in Kent County,
One out of five children faces food insecurity

In 2022, we served 2,242 hungry households. And every month, we serve an average of 550 people, including 145 children. And with the recent suspension of the federal emergency food benefits, those numbers are rising weekly. More than 245,000 households in Kent County live below the federal poverty level. Or they live in households that earn above the level, but not enough to afford household necessities. Based on donations, the Emergency Food Assistance Program also provides personal care items, household products, clothing, and baby essentials. There is also an overwhelming need for can openers, fresh produce, and protein offerings.
