How We Help Brighten The Holidays
Our Adopt-A-Family and Red Ribbon Basket programs help provide Christmas gifts, grocery cards, personal hygiene items and more to help families in our community celebrate during the Christmas season.

October 21st-November 1st
Adopt-A-Family?
Every child deserves to experience the joy of Christmas morning. Elkhart's Adopt-A-Family program helps provide Christmas gifts, grocery gift cards, and hygiene items to families across their community. Once a family has been registered and accepted they are adopted by donors in your community who purchase gifts. The gifts are distributed to the family to place under their family Christmas tree.
Red Ribbon Baskets
Red Ribbon Baskets are for families in need in the Elkhart community who are not accepted by adopters as part of the Adopt-A-Family program. Families who receive a Red Ribbon Basket will receive a basket full of personal hygiene items such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, toothbrushes, and much more. Additionally, families who sign up for Adopt-A-Family but are not chosen will receive a Toys for Tots voucher and Grocery gift card.
Requirements:
Christmas Assistance applications are for households with children 14 and under
Qualified families may be chosen for adoption once per lifetime. Each household not chosen for adoption will receive a Toys for Tots voucher, a Red Ribbon Basket, and a grocery gift card (amount based on financial need).
- The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots require a current photo Id for pickup
- Required documents to be uploaded by applicant:
- Current Government Issued Photo ID for anyone over 14 in the household
- Birth Certificate for children ages 14 and under (guardianship paperwork for those not listed on birth certificate)
- If your family is being considered for Adopt-A-Family, you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit proof of all income and address

Give back, become an adopter or sponsor
Adopters-
- Picks the number of children and size of family they would like to adopt
- Purchases new and age appropriate items for each child valued at $75 or more and a gift for each adult in the home
- Provides one Personal Care Basket (Red Ribbon Basket): a laundry basket with the following items in it: Personal hygiene & household items (we provide the basket and suggested list)
- Provides one grocery gift card/ certificate for family to purchase items for Christmas dinner. Please take into consideration the size of the family you will be adopting
Sponsors-
- Provides one Personal Care Basket (Red Ribbon Basket): a laundry basket with the following items in it: Personal hygiene & household items (we provide the basket and suggested list)
- We are looking for donors to help us raise funds for grocery gift cards
