How We Help Cure Hunger
The Salvation Army of Des Moines Citadel welcomes anyone in need who walks through our doors, including the homeless, people down on their luck and in need of a little extra help, older adults, and families struggling to feed their growing children.
Food Pantry
- Food Pantry program strengths: Food insecurity is a major issue in the Des Moines area. That’s why we offer a free cupboard where people in need can stop by and pick up nonperishables and other food items.
- Food Pantry hours: The cupboard is located here at Des Moines Citadel Corps (1216 E. 25th Ct.) and is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also at that same location, we offer free lunches Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. – dine-in only.
Mobile Breakfast Service
- Mobile Breakfast Service schedule: The Mobile Breakfast Canteen goes out on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. On Tuesdays, it will move through the north side. On Thursdays, it moves through downtown. Wednesdays start around 8 a.m. and go through the south side.
- Mobile Breakfast Service program strengths: Our mobile breakfast service serves a hot egg casserole, as well as beverages, individually boxed cereals, donuts, hard-boiled eggs and other items when available to approximately 1,000 homeless and near-homeless people. For more information about the program or for details about how to volunteer, please call 515-282-3599.

Give With Joy
Donating cash or nonperishable food items to a food pantry is vital in ensuring that individuals and families facing hunger have access to the resources they need to thrive, especially during times of crisis.
