The Salvation Army Divisional Volunteer of the Year Awards

May 27, 2015

Family Volunteer of the Year / Mike and Marge Duke (Fulton Heights Corps Community Center)

For almost 25 years, this couple has been faithful volunteers at a Home for Veterans in Michigan. Now in their 80s, The husband (a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran) and his wife make regular visits to the home and assisted in seasonal outreaches.

Organizational Volunteer of the Year / Elk Rapids High School NHS (Traverse City Corps Community Center)

This group of young people have been volunteering for us for many, many years and for this we are very grateful!  The young people may change from year to year as others come in and others go but we couldn't ask for a better group of energetic young people.

Youth Volunteer of the Year / Cameron Voss (Sault Ste. Marie Corps Community Center

Most teens would want to be sleeping in, playing video games or hanging out with friends, not her. You can find her hanging out with her friends at school events after a teacher asked for help with an event such as directing people to a location to set up for a craft fair. You can find her playing on the computer by showing senior citizens FB or an app on their new phone. You will find her sleeping in only when there wasn’t something she could volunteer to help with.

Individual Volunteer of the Year / Les Chase (Fulton Heights Corps Community Center)

What doesn't this volunteer do?  This person has held a variety of positions here since at least 1988 (when we have the earliest record).  He has been actively involved in leadership as long as we've known him, including, but not limited to Sunday School Teacher, UPWARD Director/Coach/Referee, SONday's Cool Devotional leader, Adventure Corps leader, Bandsmen and Songster Member. He also within the past 2 years has done an exceptional ministry with our weekly Children's Message on Sundays.

Lifetime Service Award / Cindy Traylor (Kent County - Angel Tree)

This volunteer has been actively volunteering with our Angel Tree program for over 20 years. These past three years she has taken on the additional role of leading volunteers for our Angel Tree distribution by recruiting, training, orienting, and monitoring the work of other volunteers. Her experience has been invaluable in helping to make the distribution run smoothly, and helps to make Christmas dreams come true for almost 7,000 children in our community.
