Silver & Gold: Valuable Coins Donated to Central Indiana Red Kettles

Dec 21, 2021

Five coins made of silver, gold, and platinum have been dropped in Central Indiana Red Kettles over the past few weeks as anonymous gifts.

The first to appear were donated in November at a Red Kettle in front of a Needler's grocery store in downtown Indianapolis. Carefully wrapped in a note, the four coins were truly special: a one-ounce American Platinum Eagle, one-ounce Mickey Mouse Silver Chibi from New Zealand, a two-ounce Jesus Walking on the Sea silver coin from the Scottsdale Mint, and a 1/10-ounce gold Kookaburra coin from Australia.

The note read: "Dear Friends of Central Indiana, God bless you all during this Holiday Season. Give us the grace and imagination to surprise with generosity, for surely it is more blessed to give than to receive. In our times of struggle know that He will have compassion on the poor and needy, and the lives of the needy. He will save. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all of our brothers and sisters. May the Spirit of this magical season lift us all to a better place of compassion and empathy for All."

The total value of the coins is estimated to be around $1,800, which will go to support The Salvation Army's Ruth Lilly Women and Children's Center in downtown Indy. The Red Kettle at Needler's is the only one in the city that is designated specifically to support the shelter, so the donation is an huge blessing.

Another surprise came in December when a $15 Canadian gold coin valued at approximately $1,800 was secretly dropped into a Red Kettle at a Walmart in Avon. The coin was wrapped inside a $1 bill with a note that read, "Merry Christmas - Blessing To You."

“The money from this gift is significant to us at Eagle Creek,” shared Lt. Josh Hubbard of The Salvation Army Eagle Creek. “It’s more than a coin - it’s hours of youth programs throughout our building, and additional resources for families to stay connected. Thank you to whoever gave us this blessing.”

Thank you to our anonymous Angel Donors who thought to give in such a fun and impactful way. These gifts not only support year-round programs at The Salvation Army, but they also lift the spirits of the staff and volunteers who give so much time to doing the most good for their community.
