The Purpose
Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven "Hallelujah Lassies" arrived in New York City March 10, 1880, officially launching The Salvation Army's work in the U.S.A. More than 100 years later, the Army is at work in all 50 states, operating thousands of centers and programs, ranging from disaster relief to day care centers

The purpose of The Salvation Army Archives and Research Center is to collect, preserve and make available the permanently valuable records of The Salvation Army in the United States.

Located within The Salvation Army National Headquarters building at 615 Slaters Lane in Alexandria, VA, the Archives and Research Center is open to the public. You may contact them at Archives@usn.salvationarmy.org or at 703.684.5529.

Researchers outside of The Salvation Army use the Archives' resources to explore widely ranging topics, such as the history of America's social services and the contribution of women to the field.

The Archives serves as an excellent resource for Salvationists researching local data or topics of broader interest to The Salvation Army world.
